PRINCE2 Agile Version 2: What's New—and What Stays the Same?

PRINCE2 Agile combines two powerful approaches: the structured project governance of PRINCE2 with the flexibility of agile working methods. The goal is to manage projects in a controlled yet adaptable manner, especially in dynamic environments.

Since the introduction of the first version in 2015, not only has the project landscape evolved, but so has the underlying framework. With PRINCE2 Agile Version 2, the interplay between governance and agility has been comprehensively modernized—with clear benefits for organizations and project managers.

Why was PRINCE2 Agile further developed?

The second version of PRINCE2 Agile is based on the new PRINCE2 7 standard, which was published in 2023. It takes into account current real-world requirements, new agile trends, and the growing importance of leadership and corporate culture.

The further development has one central goal: greater practical relevance, better scalability, and stronger integration of agile principles into the project management approach.

The Most Important New Features in PRINCE2 Agile Version 2

1. Alignment with PRINCE2 7

The biggest change: PRINCE2 Agile Version 2 is built entirely on the modernized PRINCE2 7—including new principles, roles, and structures. These include, for example, a greater focus on people and a clearer distinction between the project and the product.

2. Focus on Mindset and Culture

Agility is not just a method, but a mindset. Version 2 places particular emphasis on the agile mindset, the role of corporate culture, and the importance of team accountability.

3. Agile Leadership

A new chapter is devoted to the topic of agile leadership: How do you lead teams in an agile way—without losing control? What qualities are essential for leaders today? These questions are addressed systematically.

4. Performance Measurement in Agile Environments

PRINCE2 Agile Version 2 now provides concrete approaches formeasuring and managing performance in agile projects —without losing sight of the focus on results.

5. Tailoring & Scaling

The section on adapting to different project sizes and organizational contexts has been extensively revised. The new version provides more guidance on scaling and tailoring, including practical recommendations.

6. Improved Structure and Language

The language has been made clearer, more understandable, and more inclusive. The new structure ensures better readability and faster access —for both beginners and experienced users.

7. More Real-World Examples

PRINCE2 Agile Version 2 includes significantly more practical examples and scenarios to help apply the theory more effectively to day-to-day project work.

What stays the same?

Despite many new features, the core approach of PRINCE2 Agile remains the same:

  • Combining Governance and Agility: PRINCE2 provides structure, while agile methods offer flexibility.

  • Certification Structure: The certification levels (Foundation & Practitioner) will remain in place.

  • Tool Neutrality: Version 2 also does not favor any specific agile framework— Scrum, Kanban, or SAFe can still be integrated.
