What is ISTQB?®? Definition, Explanation, and Certification
The International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB®) Based in Belgium, the organization compiles proven concepts and terminology in test management as a subset of quality management. This results in curricula that enable this knowledge to be taught in a structured manner.
The idea behind this is that software has long since become an integral and indispensable part of our daily lives. When software products do not function as they should, it is not only frustrating but often also detrimental to a company’s productivity or even poses a security risk. Quality management should therefore be a central component of forward-thinking software development.
A Structured Approach to Identifying Sources of Errors and Quality Requirements: The ISTQB Method
All software processes data using rules. However, the sheer number of possible combinations makes it impossible to formally prove correct processing even for very simple applications. This is also because, in practice, it is not possible to test all possible combinations of data and rules.
ISTQB training courses therefore provide the knowledge and skills needed to take a different, smarter approach to test management: By examining and evaluating test objects from as many different perspectives as possible, you can meet quality requirements effectively and efficiently.
The watchful eye of quality management—essential from the very beginning
Software development is like building a house: Great things can only be built on a solid foundation. Only when quality management is firmly integrated into the development process from the very beginning—and when test teams identify errors as early as the design phase and at the start of the implementation phase—can those errors be corrected without significant time or cost. Similarly, test automation can only reach its full potential if the initial preparatory steps have already been taken during the development phase.
Of course, test management does not stand alone. Ideally, it is integrated into agile (Scrum, DevOps) or traditional development models, draws on the results of requirements management (IREB), and shares the goals of IT service management (ITIL: Utility and Warranty).
