What is OKR?
The OKR method is an adaptable framework for defining and achieving goals. The acronym stands for “Objectives & Key Results”: At the heart of the framework are objectives, the achievement of which is tracked by measuring key results.
OKRs are set, tracked, and realigned in a relatively short, often quarterly cycle. This applies both to the organization as a whole and to each individual team. This results in a simple, agile, and quickly implementable process that incorporates the perspectives of all departments. This leads to one of the main advantages of the OKR method: aligning the entire organization with transparent, measurable goals. Even in a dynamic environment, this ensures that all employees, teams, and leaders are committed to the same path with clear priorities. Unlike many traditional methods, the focus here is not on carrying out specific activities—but rather on measurably achieving the Key Results. Thus, with OKR, the emphasis is not on completing projects or working through tasks, but on the impact or outcome of these actions.
OKR as an Agile Framework
Objectives & Key Results can do more than just help formulate goals and facilitate communication. The OKR framework is designed as an agile system that aligns long- and short-term goals as well as different roles, teams, and business units. It is strongly influenced by the agile values of review and adaptation, continuity, and self-commitment. Teams commit to their OKRs without linking their achievement to bonuses or other incentives typically associated with traditional employee goal-setting tools. Because it involves all stakeholders to a high degree, the OKR method becomes an effective leadership tool and organizational model that functions independently of existing structures.
OKRs can be combined particularly well with Scrum because typical events in the OKR model can be structured similarly to the familiar events in a sprint. This allows Scrum to set the operational rhythm based on sprint cycles, while clearly defined OKRs provide direction on a quarterly basis. The framework even includes a role not unlike that of the Scrum Master: The OKR Coach supports teams and management in formulating their goals and results, removes obstacles, and coordinates the continuous improvement of the methodology.
Proven, results-oriented, successful
OKR has been around since the 1970s. The concept was developed by Andy Grove for Intel and implemented with great success. He drew inspiration from Peter Drucker’s “Management by Objectives.” However, OKRs were popularized by John Doerr, one of Google’s earliest investors. Since their introduction at Google in its first year of operation in 1999, Objectives & Key Results have consistently supported the company’s growth from 40 employees at the time to over 60,000 today.
To this day, the OKR method continues to set the standard for a wide range of successful companies, including LinkedIn, Twitter, Dropbox, Spotify, Airbnb, Uber, and, of course, Google. But it isn’t just suited for digital organizations. More traditional companies like Walmart, The Guardian, and ING-DiBa also use OKR to their advantage.
Objectives & Key Results are a powerful tool for defining and tracking results-oriented goals. On a small scale, they contribute to greater transparency and better communication, but they can also easily support the design and implementation of an organization-wide digital transformation. One thing, however, remains crucial regardless of scale: OKRs are a continuous process that requires consistent implementation and a high degree of transparency. When used in this way, OKRs become the guiding star of a results- and goal-oriented organization.
